Klinische relevantie

Methylmalonzuur is een organisch zuur waarvan vaak verhoogde waarden worden aangetroffen in het bloed bij een vitamine B12-deficiëntie. Na behandeling hiervan zullen de MMA-waarden in het bloed weer vrij snel verlagen. Na vergelijking van deze resultaten kan worden vastgesteld of sprake is van een vitamine B12-deficiëntie.

Hiernaast kunnen verhoogde waarden ook wijzen op nierfunctiestoornissen, hypovolemia (verminderd bloedvolume) en een te sterke bacteriegroei in de darmen.
